Donononagan Captivating sounds that truly put the listener in a realistic environment. For me, it took my imagination to a dilapidated barn on the edge of a remote forest inhabited by an old woman alchemist and her wild pets. Where will it take you?

Jakub Knera The young artist weaves her compositions from various elements: field recordings, sounds of the violin, zither, and harpsichord, at one point even interwoven with delicate vocals. In the spirit of Claire Rousay or Marta Forsberg, she creates an intimate picture of everyday life, an ambient space based on improvisation and meditation.

about

Polish artist Martyna Basta presents Making Eye Contact With Solitude, a suite of intimate, diaristic ambient pieces assembled over the past several months. Created using almost exclusively field recordings and her voice (alongside violin, zither and harpsichord), this collection meditates on domesticity, loneliness, repetitiveness, stubborn patterns of isolated minds and the sonic mysteries all around us. There’s a real gentleness to these spontaneous and confessional improvisations, despite that fact that making them was a way of “making peace with myself and the reality around me” for the Kraków-based artist. The artwork created by costume designer, sculptor and illustrator Julita Goździk and track titles also allude to an interest in rituality, repetitiveness and the cyclical nature of our existence.

Constant listening, instinct and intuition are key to Martyna Basta’s practice. Having studied classical guitar for many years as a child, Basta now focuses her energies on more abstract forms of art as a photographer, musician, member of the PROGREFONIK collective and Radio Kapitał resident. Making Eye Contact With Solitude follows a string of shorter self-releases and is her label debut, and a wonderful introduction to her back-catalogue for many. Slotting in somewhere between the vocal mantras of Cucina Povera, the emotional immediacy of Claire Rousay’s recordings and the carefully crafted sonic environs of Félicia Atkinson, Martyna Basta is carving out a unique corner of the ambient world for herself.

"...music that moves through the air like leaves falling to the ground. There’s a powerful sense in this music of embedding in surroundings..." – The Quietus

"...a study of loneliness, a fascinating picture of pandemic reality. The young artist weaves her compositions from various elements: field recordings, sounds of the violin, zither, and harpsichord, at one point even interwoven with delicate vocals." – The Quietus

"Another striking work... Non-verbal vocals that are almost pained, sounds that could be scratched floors or swirling bodies of water, ambient fluctuations, starkly surprising harpsichord manifestations… It’s a fascinating release." – Bandcloud

"...engages with the (e)motion of field recordings and voice — Martyna Basta responds to the movement of insect song, water and whatnot with absorbing intimacy." – Viking's Choice, Lars Gotrich

"In Krakow, the Polish Martyna Basta creates magical, tinkling and lightly crackling sound spaces, which one can dream away in, by oneself or in company." – Gonzo Circus 167

"...a notable debut from a talented artist to be followed with interest." - The New Noise

"...engrossing and gorgeous..." – Utility Fog
